RE: Smoking a turkey

Be sure to brine. Have you ever had a smoke-fried turkey?? To kill for.
Sue
What do you use for a brine?:h
I've found this link quite useful. You'll find a good basic brine recipe under "Smoking Tips"...

It can be entertaining to listen to cat fighting, turf wars, lack of tolerance, and overall lack of courtesy and respect. Did I say it was entertaining? Go figure. :h

RE: Probably not the best idea Big 3 if it is true

They ignore that by law the American taxpayer will then become responsible for these people by supplying unemployment benefits, job re-training programs, Welfare, Pension guarantee programs, and a number of other social programs. Short-sighted at the very least!
Short sighted is an understatement. Everyone who wants so badly to see the auto industry fail needs to think long and hard about the fact their taxes will pay for these programs. They're wishing for more national debt and increased taxes to cover hundreds of billions of dollars in programs.
At the same time failure of the Big 3 will mean a loss of $145 billion in taxes the first 3 years, pretty much a double whammy to wish for.
How does being against throwing away good money after bad translate to:
"Wishing for the BIG THREE's demise?"

RE: hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg

Thanks for all the answers! One more question, I've seen where a number of you say it will lower blood pressur, but I am not taking it for that reason, in fact, my blood pressure is already low. It's usually 118/74. So will this diuretic lower my blood pressure?
At 12.5mg, the effect on the BP of a full grown adult would probably be minimal if at all. HCTZ has a greater effect on BP when taken in combination with other antihypertensives...
From Mosby's Drug Consult:
Mechanism of Action
The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of thiazides is unknown. Hydrochlorothiazide does not usually affect normal blood pressure.
Hydrochlorothiazide affects the distal renal tubular mechanism of electrolyte reabsorption. At maximal therapeutic dosage all thiazides are approximately equal in their diuretic efficacy.
Hydrochlorothiazide increases excretion of sodium and chloride in approximately equivalent amounts. Natriuresis may be accompanied by some loss of potassium and bicarbonate.
After oral use, diuresis begins within 2 hours, peaks in about 4 hours, and lasts about 6-12 hours.

RE: Life of a real UAW Autoworker

ok,this stuff is just unbelievable. where do people come up with these numbers? do you really think uaw members make $73.20 per hour? i can tell you how they come up with that number, but the union bashers would not believe it. so i`ll offer this, i`ll be more than happy to take a pay cut to $60.00 an hour cash, take no benifits, and save the company $13.20 an hour! sounds like a great deal!!
Tell it to Forbes Magazine...

RE: Chrysler asks for bailout, gives bonuses....

The information came from the bureau of labor statistics linked below and figures all compensation including wages, holidays, overtime, FICA, unemployment compensation, vacations, retirement and healthcare, The wages add up to about half of the total compensation in the union made cars and a lots less in the nonunion. The huge problem of course is that the average worker retires in their early 50’s and has to be paid until they die and their healthcare (great policy with dental and eyeglasses once a year) is paid until they reach Medicare age. GM has about 3 retired and surviving spouses for each actual worker. They recently got concessions for new hires, but won’t ever have new hires as so many are laid off. In the job bank program the industry has about 12,000 people who report to wok each day with nothing to do no assigned task. They collect everything. Retiring at 51 with $3,100 a month and full medical car has to be paid in by the buyers of existing cars. This plan will just not work and the $73 total compensation as opposed to the $48 for the transplant autos and the $29 for all American manufacturing is not going to work. At well over 51 , I can not see my hard earned tax dollars going to support somebody who retired so early. GO get a job and save the auto industry.

From reading your post I would have to say that you are a little envious of the Big 3 autoworkers. Please don't feel to bad because about half of the information that you have posted here is untrue. I know because I worked in the industry for 40 years.
If half of what Lindsay posted is untrue, it shouldn't be too difficult then for you to cite three examples...

RE: Chrysler asks for bailout, gives bonuses....

My point is that when someone hears or sees on the news that an autoworker is costing $78 or whatever they are saying now (evidently they don't keep track of what they are claiming as it changes almost daily) they think that much is going into the workers pocket which simply is not true. Dave
Perhaps this will help.

RE: Favorite Smoking Wood...

Most of the stores around here operate under the belief that in the entire universe, the only two types of wood suitable for smoking are hickory and mesquite.
However, I've found that our local Bass Pro Shop stocks a much wider selection including cherry, maple and apple.
But overall, I'm partial to apple...

RE: Chrysler asks for bailout, gives bonuses....

I don't see how they can call themselves Americas big three auto makers.
In my case we have two Chrysler vehicles a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan ES --- Made in Canada. A 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser --- Made in Mexico. American car maker-I don't think so.

RE: hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg

12.5mg is the smallest dose available.
I take 50mg each morning, have been for a few years now. I'd also suggest you take it in the morning. You'll likely be making more trips to the bathroom so watch your morning coffee intake until you get used to it.
I also buy mine from Walmart rather than deal with the mail order outfit my insurance company insists upon.
I "assume" that these are not enteric coated or timed release and could be split using a tablet cutter if one wanted a lower dose?
bumpy
Good morning Bumpy,
I'm looking through my copy of Mosby's Drug Consult and find the 12.5mg dose as being available only as a granulated capsule.
But 25 and 50mg are available in uncoated tablet form. They are also scored to make cutting easier.

RE: Wow, could the answer be any clearer, re GM?

I'm not a corporate CEO or a member of the UAW. I work for my money and really don't have much use for either.
But as much as I'd hate to see them close their doors, if GM can't make it without my financial assistance then they'll just have to go the way of American Motors, Kaiser Motors, Studebaker, Nash and Willys.
We survived their passing, we'll survive this one too...

RE: High blood pressure

I was first diagnosed with HBP when I was 21. Since then, I've taken a long line of anti hypertensives, but the drugs they had 30 years ago were little more than tranquilizers and the side effects were sometimes worse than the disease itself.
Today I take Atenolol, HCTZ, Enalapril and Lovastatin.
I've learned over the years that not only is proper diet and exercise important, but a good nights sleep is essential in keeping things in check. As we get older, our sleep habits change and many of us find ourselves getting by on a lot less sleep than we did when we were younger. This deficit in sleep causes our bodies to produce excess Cortisol, otherwise known as: the stress hormone.
Cortisol not only raises BP it also increases blood sugar levels which can lead to a condition called "metabolic syndrome".
I've read a lot of good things about Bystolic, but I would suggest the next time you pick up your prescription, ask the pharmacist for a copy of the Bystolic "drug insert" and take some time to read it.
Especially the section titled "Interactions". You can also track down the same detailed information at your local library in the "Physicians Desk Reference" or PDR...

RE: A view from within GM

The judge will have to declare all the union deals null and void, including the lifetime healthcare for existing retirees. The head of the UAW declared over the weekend, that they were not giving any ground to management. -What a surprise.
With a 25 billion dollar bailout on the way, why should they give up anything?
